Hello May in Hanoi: The Season That Stays With You

This year, May arrives in Hanoi with cool, gentle rains, just enough to soften the early summer heat and wash the city clean. Everything feels fresher, greener, and a little slower in the best way. And then, almost without noticing, you will see it — the streets turning soft purple with bằng lăng (crepe myrtle) flowers. Quiet and unassuming, but soon that color will stretch across the city, marking the true beginning of summer in Hanoi.

Hanoi does not rush into a new season. It shifts, gently, through small details that locals grow up noticing and remembering.

A City of Seasons, A City of Feelings

Hanoi has always been like this. Twelve months, twelve flower seasons, each carrying its own feeling. May is when everything starts to feel a little more alive — not because of big changes, but because of subtle ones you only notice if you slow down.

A breezy morning after the rain. A quiet street suddenly filled with purple blossoms. A moment where the city feels softer than usual.

These are the things that make Hanoi special — not just a place to visit, but a place to experience.

The Taste of Hanoi Summer: Simple, Familiar, Unforgettable

Right now, the sấu trees are at their greenest. Soon, the dracontomelon fruits will turn yellow, ready to become the flavors we grow up with — a light and tangy canh sấu (sour dracontomelon soup), duck stewed with the fruit, or a chilled glass of it on a warm afternoon. Just thinking about it, we already crave it. And yes, we will probably complain about the heat while ordering our second glass.

Hanoi street food in summer is not about something fancy. It is about balance — light but flavorful, simple but deeply satisfying. The kind of food that fits perfectly into everyday life, especially on warm days when you just want something refreshing yet comforting.

Everyday Hanoi: Where Real Experiences Happen

But summer in Hanoi is more than the weather or the food. It lives in the small, familiar moments we share — simple family meals that somehow feel complete, evenings spent outside catching a bit of breeze, and long, easy chats with friends over sunflower seeds, iced tea, and a few grilled bites.

You might sit on a small plastic stool on a busy sidewalk, doing nothing special, and yet somehow, that becomes one of the most memorable parts of your trip.

That is the Hanoi we love — not just famous places, but the rhythm of everyday life, the hidden corners, the small stories behind each dish, each street, each habit.

The Stories You Only Find If You Slow Down

That is also what our food tours are built around — not a checklist of dishes, but a reason to slow down long enough to hear what the city is actually saying. Small groups, spots we actually go to ourselves, stories that are real.

And if you want to understand Hanoi beyond the food — our coffee workshop is a good place to start. Egg coffee did not happen by accident. There is a whole story behind that cup.

If either sounds like the kind of trip you want, we would love to be your local buddy.

Hello May, Hello Hanoi

May does not try to impress you. It simply arrives — a little rain, a street full of purple, a bowl of something sour and cold that you did not know you needed.

If you are visiting Hanoi this May, reach out to us on WhatsApp with your travel dates. We will help you find the version of this city that most people walk right past.

See you in the alleys. 💛 — Beyond Vietnam Team
