From sauce to soul: A family journey through Hanoi's taste 🥢

Updated: Dec 7, 2025

Hanoi, July 1st, 2025

Say hello to Sarah’s lovely family of five, all the way from New Zealand! 👋

Louder

This is our family’s second time in Vietnam, but the first time they truly tried the taste of Hanoi. Last time was Ho Chi Minh City - vibrant, buzzing, but the flavors of the North had yet to be discovered. So this time, they came with open minds, curious hearts, and the warmest smile for every dish.

Conical hats - check! ✅ We’re so ready to dive in the amazing and diverse Vietnamese cuisine! From bánh cuốn, bún riêu, nộm, bánh rán to bánh giò under the shade of leafy streets - each stop revealed a new layer of flavor, and a new smile. And the star of today? Let’s just say not a single drop of dipping sauce was left, our family loved them all! 😄 The sauce is the perfect balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy - the kind of thing you want to bottle up and take home.

It’s not just about the flavours, each dish is like a little window into Vietnam’s history and culture. Everyone picked up chopsticks like locals - but the sweetest moment? Watching our youngest girl carefully align chopsticks - “so đũa”, then handing them to mom and dad, just like Vietnamese traditional custom. A small gesture, but one that carried all the love, respect and tenderness in the world. 💛

To Sarah and your wonderful family, thank you for your presence, your kindness, and the love for Vietnam. We’ll always welcome you back for more fantastic dishes and of course more sauces to discover!
